Deven Fejka, FNP-C

From a young age, Deven harbored an ambition to pursue a career in the medical field, driven by a desire to assist others. This aspiration led her to embark on a career in nursing, which subsequently evolved into a nurse practitioner role. Throughout her career, she has worked in various settings, primarily hospital-based, caring for the acutely ill. However, she developed a particular affinity for the unpredictable nature of the emergency room in a critical access hospital in south Mississippi, where “doing the most with what you have” was a daily affirmation.

While the emergency room environment was highly rewarding, it also presented significant challenges due to the misuse of the system. Numerous individuals sought emergency care for chronic conditions because they lacked access to primary care providers, either due to the absence of insurance or difficulties in securing appointments. This misuse often diverted time and resources away from true emergencies. The challenges faced in this environment fostered strong autonomy and confidence in Deven, enabling her to care for many patients with complex medical conditions who were unable to seek care elsewhere due to transportation barriers in a rural setting.

Additionally, Deven observed a prevalent issue of patients presenting with undiagnosed or untreated mental disorders, stemming from a shortage of mental health providers. The intersection of mental and physical health in these cases highlighted the acute need for comprehensive care.

These experiences prompted Deven to pursue further education and obtain a post-graduate certification as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She then sought a position where she could contribute meaningfully to resolving these systemic issues by offering mental health services, primary care, and preventive medicine, with the aim of keeping individuals healthy and out of the emergency department. Ultimately, she found her professional home at DPC Plus, where she continues to make a significant impact in the lives of her patients by providing holistic and accessible healthcare.

Deven’s evolution in her career showcases her dedication to addressing the root causes of health disparities and her commitment to improving the overall well-being of her community. Her work at DPC Plus embodies a holistic approach to healthcare, focusing not only on treating illnesses but also on preventive measures and mental health support, ensuring a healthier future for all.
